Good morning,

I have the R5 now for almost a year and it is indeed a fantastic camera. However, by whatever reasons the AF points disappeared and I only see them, when I focus to nowhere and then can point the camera to my motive. After I shot the picture, the AF points disappear immediately. I also can't move the AF points with the curser or any other button.
They are stuck in the middle of the screen/view finder.

I have installed the firmware 1.6, before the problems appeared. I am sure, it is not a firmware problem.

Is there anybody who can explain to me, how to turn something on to see the AF points constantly and can make them move?

I am grateful for any information.

There are a couple of things I can think of that may have gone wrong here that you should check out:

  1. This one is obvious, check that you are not in any fully automatic modes that take over focusing. I assume that is not the issue here.
  2. The joystick has to be enabled in order to move the AF point. On the R6 this is under custom function menu, third tab, 'Customize buttons'. Scroll down to the joiystick and enable 'Direct AF point selection'.
  3. You can select and limit AF methods in the AF menu. Go to tab 1, AF method, and check whether all of them are available. You should also be able to switch AF methods from there, so check which one it is and whether any of the others are greyed out.
  4. Are you using back-button focusing? Have you changed the default option of what the AF-ON button does?
If you set it to eye AF for example, it will switch to that no matter what mode you are in.
  5. Some kind of weird third party lens issue? What are you using and have you tried a native RF or EF lens with the same result?

Hope this helps, let us know whether that solves the issue or if you have any additional information.

Hello Photophil, hello Danfaz,

Thank you so much for your help. Even, you could not help me directly, you could help me indirectly. I use the R5 with 1.6 firmware and only original Canon lenses. I do work with back-button setup. And the joystick was always activated. But did not work, when I pushed one of the two set up back-buttons and tried to move the AF-point.

Yes, I did reset my camera several times, the basic reset, but also each point of the Other Reset, besides of the Root Certificate Reset and Copyright Reset. However, even I did this, the camera did not lose the installation for the Eye-AF settings. Because you both made me think about my whole setup, I reset the camera one more time and recognized that the Eye-AF still was active. No matter what I did, the camera fell back to Eye-AF as mentioned by Photophil. When I deactivated that, the camera showed immediately the AF-points as it always did before the glitch. I was under the impression that a reset would indeed reset ALL of my custom setups, but it did not. I don’t know, why I did not see the still activated Eye-AF before, but maybe I just needed a push from you guys to get aware of the obvious.

Thank you again so much for your help!
